…AND NO, WE ARE NOT HALLUCINATING.
DUBBED AS the “Fight of the Millennium,” Manny Pacquiao finally tastes his eagerness to face the undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. since February after six years of sports analysts’ yearning and dreaming.
On May 3 (local time), this “dream bout” will finally reach not just on the exclusive GMA but also on the Other Two (ABS-CBN and TV5). Though Solar Sports will retain its production rights, the Big Three will send their own representatives within the weeks of the main event.
The simultaneous airing of the fight should help shouldering the burden of the producer’s $10 million (about PHP 447.81 million) on such exclusive rights.
With this announcement will mark the first unique moment of collaboration-over-competition coverage (COCC) in the sports category of the annals of Philippine television. The rest of the COCC in different genres are enlisted as follows:
- Entertainment: Musical tribute for the King of Comedy, Dolphy (September 2012)
- Religious: Papal Visit (January 15-19, 2015)
- Political: State of the Nation Address (annual)
The only question that most of us would conceive: “Is it going to be live akin to pay-per-view or is it going to be delayed like what they did on GMA alone?”
GMA’s radio division will remain as the exclusive radio broadcaster but what we are sure now is that on one Sunday of May will translate into fully booked bars, restaurants, theaters and arenas providing pay-per-view service combining with low traffic and crime in Metro Manila.
This long Labor Day (May Day) weekend will indeed be memorable, regardless of the outcome for the People’s Champ.
